Let's be honest, I'm a witty bastard. But a lot of the good stuff's all locked up these days. Still, there's always room for more.

Comment if you want in on the fun.

Hi there, I saw your comment on DP a while back about working in the orthotics/prosthetics field and it caught my interest. Can you tell me more about what you actually do (do you manufacture the devices? or design them? or fit people for them?) and how one would enter the field, or maybe point me to good resources on the subject?

Hi. Absolutely.

It's a fantastic field, first of all. You have to have a BS to get into the field these days. Maybe a BA and a certificate program. The field is moving towards a master's entry level field which I think sucks, but it's the way we're headed.

I'm still new around here so I'm not sure about programs in the area, but there are more and more schools doing this than ever.

Start with www.abcop.org. That's the main certifying agency in the field now. There's also www.bocusa.org.

Other general getting started resources - oandp.com, opcareers.org, oandpcare.org, naaop.org, ncope.org, aopanet.org, oandpbiznews.com, and my company (the largest in the industry) hanger.com.

Okay, free magazines. There are three, I think, and two have classifieds. Just fill out the thingy that you're a student or somesuch. www.oandp.com/edge, amputee-coalition.org/inmotion, biomech.com, aopanet.org/op_almanac/subscribe. InMotion is more specific to amputees, but it has great info. oandp.com has a classifieds section on line, as does BOC, I think. As does Hanger's website.

Anyway, that'll get your head spinning, I think. Google the hell out of anything you can think of, and ask me all the questions you like. If you can get in a company as a tech, your chances likely increase as far as moving forward in the career. I think it's becoming more competitive, not certain (it should be), and "bench time" always looks good. This is not an inexpensive program for schools to run, and if you've already shown interest and have bench time, your chances are just better.

For the record, most folks in my field are completely willing to answer questions and even take you around the lab. Once I'm established here, I'm happy to do those things for you, too. But do not hesitate to call and ask if someone would be willing to talk with you about the field and maybe show you around a lab.

As for what I do, I do it all. I do a lot of prefabricated stuff, but mostly I design and manufacture just about every brace I make. I'm an Orthotist. The last few years, though, I've been seeing patients and casting them and designing, but not actually fabricating the devices. Just not enough time for that, so we have techs who do the dirty work. I still do all the finish work on the braces, shaping them and tweaking them. And then I fit them to the patient and tweak them some more. Some braces require just the one visit, some take many more to adjust and all that. It's the perfect field in that it lets me use my people skills and my hands, but also keeps my brain awake by having to design just the right thing for each individual case and remember all the codes associated with each thing I do for billing.

Good luck! Seriously, ask anything you want. It's a fantastic field, and it's growing fast. I absolutely love it. I flat-out have the coolest job in the world.

Bonsoir,
I am trying to make friends with multiples/plurals in which will be able to read all of my friend-entries, plus a custom group just for. In my custom group; I am looking to learn about myself as well as others -which could help me a great deal. I will have only two custom groups actually,(women only & multiples) -the rest is friends-only. I am writing in circles. Please forgive me.
If you would like to add me, please do.
Well wishes,
moi~
